Counseling for Depression. Why wait?

Depression is a serious and common condition.  It causes individuals to feel sad or hopeless for long periods of time (think 1-3 months). Without depression treatment, symptoms of depression can quickly escalate. Depression can seriously impact one’s thinking, physical health, and close relationships.

You are not alone.

An estimated 1 in 10 adults in the United States report experiencing depression. Often people say their first bout of depression occurred in their late teens or early twenties.

It’s not just feeling bummed out or having a bad week. Depression doesn’t have anything to do with being weak. Again, think of depression as a feeling or mode of being that lasts a length of time.

Common symptoms of clinical depression

  • Frequent crying and bouts of sadness

  • Feeling hopeless or worthless

  • Getting too much or too little sleep

  • Anxiety

  • Anger

  • Difficulty enjoying activities you used to like

  • Unexplained physical ailments such as headaches or muscle pain

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Changes in weight or eating habits

  • Thoughts of suicide

You may notice that you feel angry and find yourself “losing it” or lashing out more often.  Moreover, friends and family will start to make comments. In reality, what looks like the feelings of rage may be a cover for depression. When performed by a licensed psychotherapist, depression counseling is an effective way to treat depression.

How does counseling help with depression?

Therapy is a non-judgemental space to talk about what you are feeling. Through therapy sessions, you can explore how depression symptoms are impacting your quality of life.  Depression counseling can address situational depression. Additionally, a therapist can help you identify if you should see a medical provider for a full physical evaluation or a review of medication therapies. Depression therapy includes evidence based counseling strategies know to help relieve the physical and emotional issues that come with depression.

New research suggests that ongoing depression psychotherapy may lessen the chances of future depression or reduce its intensity. Research shows that through depression counseling, people can learn skills to avoid unnecessary suffering from later bouts of depression.

What Depression Is Not

Its Not Self-Pity.

Its Not About Being Unproductive.

You are not broken; you are not weak.  It’s not about being lazy. Your body is telling you that something is really bothering you.  Now is the time to address the real issues behind personal depression.

Most Importantly, depression is not forever.

Depression Counseling Doesn’t Last Forever

Depression is not forever, and depression counseling does not have to go on for years. Many counseling clients feel ashamed for asking for help when they have a lot in life to be grateful for.  Clients say they should not “complain” or feel down because their life “looks good on paper”. However, depression does not discriminate. It comes up for people from all walks of life, at any age. In my experience as a Durham therapist, many clients tell me they feel relief after talking with someone that validates and believes their story.
